A candidate can give JEE Main exam six times over a period of three consecutive years. In a year, a candidate can appear for JEE Main four times. If the candidate has passed 12th exam in 2019 then the candidate can appear in 2020 and 2021 JEE Main. If the candidate is appearing for the class 12th board exam in 2020, then he/she can appear in the sessions of JEE Main in years 2020, 2021 and 2022. Students are advised to go through the full JEE Main eligibility criteria (https://byjus.com/jee/jee-advance-eligibility-criteria/) list in order to understand the requirements.
As has been mentioned above the JEE Mains will be held four times a year, candidate has to register separately for exam. So a candidate can appear four times each year for consecutive three years. After qualifying JEE Mains with high score, the candidate will be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced which will be conducted in online mode for Mathematics and Aptitude, and in offline mode for drawing to test sketching skills.

One can give 12 attempts of jee main over 3 consecutive years starting from the year of appearing 12th board examination.
Let's us see it in detail :-
One can give JEE Mains entrance examination for a maximum of 3 consecutive years starting from the year of passing 12th board examination.
Now,
JEE Main entrance examination is conducted 4 times a year i.e
*February session
* March session
*April session.
* May session
Out of these 4 attempts in a year, the one in which you get the best score is considered for admission process.
So, the maximum number of attempts for jee mains entrance examination
= 4 times *3 years
= 12 attempts in total
So, one has a total of 12 attempts over 3 consecutive years starting from the year of passing your 12th board examination in life time
For example,
If your 12th board examination passing year is 2021,
then you are eligible for :-
all the four sessions of JEE mains 2021
all the four sessions of JEE main 2022
and all the four sessions of jee main 2023

If I tell you about jee advanced then,
One has a total of two attempts for JEE advanced over two consecutive years starting from the year of appearing for 12th board examination i. e as per , eligibility criteria one is eligible for JEE advanced examination only in the year in which he or she appears for 12th board examination and the next year following it.
