You'll always need to comprehend these no matter what medium you utilise (photography, hand cut lettering, collage, or computer-aided pictures). The first requirement is an excellent sense of design, followed by a good sense of colour. The next phase in the learning process is to exercise your imagination skills and try to recreate them digitally. So your next requirement is software skills, i.e. understanding design tools and how to use them effectively.
