It completely depends on you that how much time you can devote to your studies. Each person's preparation time varies slightly but make sure whatever time you devote to your studies, you must study very seriously.
Minimum of 5 to 6 hours of daily are required to prepare for GATE. Even if you sre prepared well then also you must devote 2-3 hours daily to revise and practice your syllabus.

The time required to prepare for GATE varies from student to student. The early you start your preparation, the more time and benefit you will have. Usually, you can start your preparation from your second year of study. But, you can start anytime, if you are determined. First of all, you have to make your basics strong for all the important subjects and prepare according to your planning. In the last few months its all about solving numericals, practice previous years papers, giving mock tests and nurture your weak points.

It depends on your capability. If you are already good with the main subjects in general then it will take less time as you would need only a good detailed revision before the exam . So if you were really good at the concepts in UG or PG, then for revision you may need 1-1.5 months to prepare. If not , then you have start from the basics so in that case you may need 6-8 months.It can be more or less based on your level of knowledge and grasping power. You can use several online resources to speed up your preparation.
