How should I prepare for cmi's Msc C.S entrance test?
Hello vikram
For entrance exam preparation for CMI'S (chennai mathematical Institute) Msg C.S, you should have good command on Mathametiacl apptitude and ability to logically interpret the data. Candidates should be familiar with following topics: -
1) - School level mathematics
: Arithmetic and geometric progression ;arithmetic, geometric and harmonic mean; polynomial, matrices ( basic operation, inverse, transpose), determinants, solving linear equations, prime numbers and divisibility, GCD, LCM, modular arithmetic, log arithmetic, basic properties of functions (domain, range, injective, bijective, surjective), elementary calculus (differentiation, maxima-minima, integration and it's applications)
2) - Discrete Mathematics
: sets and relations, combinations and permutations, elementary counting techniques, pigeonhole principle.
3) - Probability theory
: Elementary probability theory, conditional probability and Bayes theorem.
4) - Logic
: - Boolean logic and truth tabels
5) - Programming
: - Ability to read and interpret algorithms written in simple psuedocode.
SUGGESTED TEXT BOOKS: -
There are many books which cover this material. The question asked only test basic concept. Here are few suggestions: -
1- C. L. Liu: -
Elements of discrete mathematics, McGraw hill(1986)
2- Norman Bigg's
Discrete mathematics, Oxford University press (2006)
3- Sheldon M. Ross: -
A first course in probability (9th edition), pearson(2013)
4- Henk Tijms: -
Understanding probability, Cambridge University press (2012)
5- R.G Dromey: -
How to solve it by computer, Pearson(2006)
I hope it'll help you. Thank you
Hello Vikram,
The entrance examination will primarily check mathematical aptitude and the ability to logically interpret data.
They have provided few sample questions in their website. You can check them out. I think you can relate the mathematical questions to those asked in the applied mathematics entrance. So preparing that syllabus along with some algorithms would be fine according to me.
Study core courses of B. Sc. (Mathematics and Computer Science) given at CMI website in the teaching section.
Go through previous year papers(this is also available at the CMI website in the admission section).
Hope this helps.
