The best way to get into a design career after engineering is to take up training in design available at the master's level, offered by several IITs and design institutes. The best institutes where you can take up masters in graphic design or communication design are:

• NID (National Institute of Design), Ahmedabad
• IDC, IIT Bombay
• Srishti School of Art Design and Technology, (Bengaluru, Pune, Trivandrum)
• LPU - Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar
• MIT Institute of Design (MITID), Loni Kalbhor, Pune

The most important requirement to make a career in design is an ability to think originally and work in an innovative way. You need to appear for an entrance test for admission into the Master’s programme. The examination tests for visual perception ability, drawing skills, design aptitude and communication skills. The IITs hold the Common Entrance Exam for Design (CEED) for admission into their M.Des programme while institutes like NID, NIFT etc have their own tests.

Eligibility: Most design institutes take graduates from all disciplines provided they clear the entrance test. But IITs require graduates in design, architecture, engineering or students with an MSc degree or having a background in arts, computer applications.
