First of all, it is very important to know the complete syllabus from where the examination will be asked. It is suggested to all the aspirants to collect all the information about the exam pattern and syllabus before starting up the preparation..Refer the correct and official syllabus of KVPY. The syllabus of KVPY is almost same as JEE Main or AIPMT (now known as NEET).

The aptitude test of KVPY contains the questions from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics subjects. Candidates are suggested to refer NCERT study material. It makes easy to crack the aptitude test of KVPY.

Time management plays a key role in achieving the good marks. Manage your time in such a way that every subject will get the equal attention. Provide more time to the subjects in which you are weak.

Rule of time management is also applicable at the time of examination. Firstly, solve that portion of the question paper that you know most.

By practicing mock test, you are able to identify your weak points and strong points. Also, you will learn how to manage time during the examination. Through the mock test, you can check your performance time to time.

It is difficult to exactly point out books that you should study from, as the syllabus is very broad. Basic knowledge of science subjects at the school level does cover up most part of the exam syllabus.

Subject-wise analysis for KVPY SA Examination 2019 and recommended books to study:

PHYSICS : Make sure that you are thorough with the class XI syllabus. The most important topics are Mechanics, Ray Optics, Electromagnetism. You should know the class XI level Mechanics properly.

I assume that Ray Optics and Electromagnetism is not there in your class XI syllabus. But there is no need to worry. The basic class X level knowledge in these two topics is enough.

The less important topics, that is – Thermodynamics, SHM, and Waves should preferably be completed from the class XI book.

Fundamentals of Physics by David Halliday, Robert Resnick, Jearl Walker. It is published by Wiley Publication. Another book is Concepts of Physics by DC Pandey

MATHEMATICS : You will need to know almost all topics from class XI. Class X level knowledge of Geometry is required. If you know the basics of Number Theory, it will help you a lot. Mental ability based questions which involve Algebra, Geometry are important.

Important chapters include Quadratic Equation, Progression and Series, Permutations and Combination, Basic Geometry. In Coordinate Geometry, Conics is NOT required.

Mathematics for Class XI by RD Sharma. It is published by Dhanpat.

CHEMISTRY : In brief, you need the knowledge of Physical Chemistry of Class XI level. The key chapters are Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Chemical Energetics, Stoichiometry and Gaseous State.

Class X level knowledge of Organic Chemistry is enough for you. Don’t worry about Inorganic Chemistry. Hardly any question comes from there. Even if you encounter an odd question from there, you will be able to solve it with a basic Class X knowledge.

Moderns ABC of Chemistry for Class-XI with CD by Modern Publishers. Another book is NCERT Physical and Organic Chemistry by OP Tandon.

BIOLOGY : I am not a Biology student. I didn’t have Biology as my subject in Class XI. If you don’t have it too, don’t worry, just be cool. A basic Class X knowledge of Biology is enough.

Infact if you know the Class X syllabus pretty well, you can even score cent- percent marks in Biology. Just open your class X book and revise.

Apart from these, course material for NCERT examinations also helps you to prepare well for KVPY. Studying these books will increase your fundamental knowledge of these four science subjects and your concepts on other topics as well.

Studying text books for KVPY which are recommended above will be helpful in attempting questions which are out of the syllabus. There are some general knowledge questions for which you cannot always prepare for.

Covering the entire above mentioned syllabus will make it easier to answer the tricky questions. As for the reasoning and analytical part, answering well will not depend on how much you know. This section of the question paper needs to be dealt with precision for the most accurate answers. For that, rather than studying on particular book, practice as many previous question papers as you can.

There are always last year question papers available online or in the markets. These books contain a vast collection of sample test papers which you can practice. The more you solve these questions, the sharper your analyzing ability will be.

Last piece of advice for KVPY 2019 examination

Solve the previous years question papers of KVPY rigorously. Find your loopholes, and work on them.

Unlike IIT-JEE, you are NOT going to face new types of problems every year in KVPY. So, if you have thoroughly practiced previous years questions, then it helps immensely.

Finally, it is just a test of your Analytical Skills and your Aptitude in Science.
