Hello Rahul,
To get an admission in any IIT you need to score really good in the JEE advance exam. But to give JEE advance, you need to qualify JEE mains first.
so it is a 2 step process:
one is clearing the mains
two is clearing the advance.
JEE mains is conducted in two shifts. One in January and other in April. The best of these two will be your accountable result.
Now after qualifying JEE mains , you'll be allowed to give JEE advance. For getting a seat in IIT, your advance rank will be applicable only. and the jee mains rank is helpful for you to get seat in NIT's.
For admission, after you get your advance rank, you need to apply through JOSAA counseling for an IIT seat. Based on the merit list you'll be allocated a branch from your preferences. And than you will have to go to your allocated counseling center for the verification of your documents.
Hope it helps.
All the best.

for admission in nits you will need to have a strong experience with the topics and the model of questions that are well prone to occur for the examination and for that the whole topic of the syllabus should be well known. All you can do is work hard and dedicate yourself untill you get admission there without getting distracted towards other activities..
