NITs offer admission into B.Tech(Mechanical Engineering) based on your percentile in JEE Main Paper 1.
Once you secure a score greater than the cutoff, you can attend the counselling sessions and give your preference. Honouring your preference is subject to various constraints.
The cutoff percentile for Mechanical Branch is different in different NITs.
For example, for NIT Patna, the previous cutoff for general was around 48000 rank while for NIT Warangal, it was only 11000.
Generally percentile above 96-98 is expected to get good NITs.
