Hey there,
There are various things you can do to improve your personality and skills as a officer in defence.

Start being disciplined and follow routines. This will help you in adjusting to the defence Environment where everything will happen according to a schedule.
Stay updated. Read newspapers and watch news to know what is going around in the world.
Wake up early and work out. Being fit will obviously help you improve a lot.
Learn leadership skills and teamwork. This is one of the most important part of being in defence. You will always have a group of people working with you. So, team management and leadership is very important.
Read books and surf on the internet. Learn about the lifestyle of officers. You can also read biographies of the well-known people from defence field. This will give you motivation.
Learn communication skills. This includes not just speaking skills, but also listening skills. As an officer, you might need these skills.
Meditate and keep yourself calm. Learn to control your emotions.
Gain knowledge about the field you are about to enter or are already in. What work you need to do, what will be the location of your work, what all are the requirements to the work, etc.
