Dear Aspirant,
For JEE Main preparation the most important thing you need is the consistency. Prepare a time table and study for a fixed 8 hours everyday, if thinking of joining coaching then study for at least 3 hours apart from the coaching.
For books, I suggest you must buy some institute coaching material even if you are not planning to join coaching. These materials are prepared with the JEE syllabus in the mind and therefore contains the exact stuff you need for preparing the JEE exam.
The next thing is Practice question. If you buy the coaching material you'll get all the question banks too. Go for these questions as you learned the topic. Keep practicing them and if you get stuck then use online resources.

Here are the few tips where you can consider
1. Prepare ncert books every book and corner. Have all the concepts in your finger tips
2. Know the syllabus and divide the topics per day. Allocate time for each subject every day and prepare a schedule of what topic to study in what subject every day
3. Take mock tests on that particular topics which you have prepared on Saturdays. Every Saturday, take test on all the topics of all the subjects which you have studied for that week
4. Sunday, analyse your mistakes, note down the mistakes and mark the concepts where mistakes are done or which you were not able to answer
5. Mark the concepts which you are kind of weak in
6. Get the syllabus and practice done atleast before 2 months the exam
7, for the last two months, take mock tests on entire syllabus, allocate then to revise the syllabus and rectify your mistakes
8. Take as many mock tests as possible
9. Make new mistakes but donot repeat the old ones
