Hello Aspirant,
It means 80 percent of your outcomes come from 20 percent of your inputs.
Its called the Pareto Principle which is trying to say: Give due emphasis to the amount that will give you the most yield. In studying then, study those components more heavily. Don’t let your brain guilt you into studying everything equally.
It doesn’t matter what numbers you use, the important aspect here is that in your life there are certain activities you do (your 20 percent) that account for the majority (your 80 percent) of your happiness and outputs.
So let’s take your upcoming exam.
Take into note the following things:
So consider you need to cover a lot of material. Spread that over say five courses. Only a small part of everything you need to study which will fetch most of your marks.
Each subject is different. You have to find what is needed. Study what is most important first, make your own notes so that revising becomes easier and you can easily elaborate what you've made.
After completing the 20% (all sections that you think is important), go for the rest 80% material; again fetching what's most important from that.
Of course, you’ll need to study ‘everything’. But in doing so, I encourage you to keep in mind that you can still study everything, just weigh their importance appropriately.
All the Best, study well!
