First of all, all the answers under this thread are from previous batches. I am a student of 2018 batch. I can provide you with the most recent scenario.
Know the first and foremost thing, the batch strength here is very large (around 3300 students in 2018 batch) so the chances of getting a good placement reduces.
It totally depends in which branch are you admitted.
If you are okay with investing 4–5 lpa and end up with a job of 1–2 lpa (most of them being BPO/Call center profiles) you can join the core branches (Civil, Electrical and Mechanical) here with a 50% chance that you may not get placed. If you are among the luckiest ones in your branch you may get placed with mass recruiters (around 3 lpa).
If you consider choosing other branches (CS, IT, Electronics) you have 80% chances of getting placed, either in top companies with very good pay (as high as 10–15 lpa in very good companies such as Amazon, Microsoft etc., but these companies recruit in very less numbers), or in mass recruiting companies with an okay salary of about 3 lpa (totally luck dependent, not a bit on your hard work). If you are among the unluckiest ones in your branch you may get placed with a low pay of 1-2 lpa in startups or small companies or even with BPO (Call center) profiles.
There are few things that I have kept in mind:
A placed one will never understand the pain of a student whose parents have invested a hefty amount out of their life savings (and sometimes loans) in their education and now they have nothing in their hands, neither the money nor the job. In this process, a crucial role was played by the tall promises of an institution. If you still say that there was no promise at all then please don’t forget to visit the institutions website and see the 100% placement every year pop in front of you where you still know the real fact.
The current scenario is that if you are from cs branch you have 80% chances of getting placed, either in top companies with very good pay or in mass recruiting companies with an okay salary.
