1. Knowledge about the syllabus for the upcoming cat exam.
2. Knowing about the pattern of the  question paper.
3. Selection of best books for the preparation.
4. Take mocks tests correspondingly.
5. Go through the previous question papers thoroughly .
6. Guidence from the previous toppers or the teachers specifed in the corresponding exam.
7. Revise thoroughly .
8. Confidence, Good health.

I'll recommend you to start your preparation atleast 6 - 8 months before CAT exam dates so that even if you start from scratch you have enough time to give sufficient mocks and cover all topics.. I'll recommend you to read as much as possible as it'll really be helpful in your preparation. Also Coaching is not that important but test series are.. If you do not have any idea about cat syllabus then better join coaching atleast 7-8 months before exam otherwise you can take test series 4 months before exam. Also note CAT preparation might differ from student to student, so first identify your strength and abilities and plan your studies accordingly.
