GATE 2025: Syllabus | Sample Papers
Hello Janani,Greetings from Careers360.com!
You can apply for this exam only in your last year for graduation. However you can start your preparation at this stage itself. If you are in a place where you have access to good coaching centers, please go for it.Else in this era of internet you have ample sources online.Try joining any institute online.Above all self study would be the best option.Start studying thoroughly from the basics right now.
Hope this helped.All the best!
Hello Aspirant,
To start preparation from the first year Graduation will help you focus on the basic concepts & In first two years of engineering you are new to subjects and you need time to cope up with the concepts. Coming to third year you will be familiar with the engineering concepts and it will be easy for you to understand new concepts.
Here are some preparation tips for GATE preparation you can prefer.
Understand syllabus properly: You must be aware about the GATE syllabus, released by the organizing IIT. You must go through the section-wise and topic-wise syllabus of your chosen branch in order to know what all you have to study and what to avoid.
Solve previous year papers: Solving previous years papers is of utmost importance if you want to excel in the exam.
Weightage of Topics: it is advisable and important to study the complete GATE Syllabus, however, you can do a small exercise to gauge which sections, topics are much more important in terms of weightage given in GATE.
Resources other than books: It is good to look up topper and expert tips in this regard as they do mention the books or material they have referred to. Many GATE toppers run their own Facebook pages or blogs where they dispense advice and tips to wannabe GATE aspirants.
Remember the following points:
Divide the Topics broadly into Strong, Weak and to be read properly.
Check the weightage by all means and understand the important topics but don’t neglect to study.
Make Short Notes while you study as this is will be helpful during revision.
Write down Formulae that you find difficult to remember so that they are handy for revision.
Keep the solved problems separately indexed so that you can refresh and revise later when required.
Analyse your preparation at every step.

Good Luck!
Hey Janani,
GATE Preparation must be very specific and subject oriented. Depth of selected topic is required rather than just knowledge. The best way to start preparation is by going through the previous years question papers. Try to understand which are the focus topics and prepare them well. Take a test series. Oce you are done with your previous years papers and completed the "focus" topic, then go for other lesser important topics. This exercise must be finished by August. From September, start attending online tests and practice as much as you can. I think you should do it in your final year of engineering. Remember - It doesnt matter how much you have crammed up stuff, all what matters in GATE is how much you have practiced. So practice maximum and try to understand the mistakes you are making. Write down your mistakes in a copy and read them often.
Good Luck.
