For becoming an IAS officer there is no restriction of degree choice , you can choose any degree of your own choice but remember one thing that is all the degrees you choose must be a graduation degree eg - BA , BSc , BTech , MBBS etc even students having post graduation degree can appear in UPSC exam . So any degree is preferable but must be atleast graduation because that is a necessary condition for eligibility .
But it is a general perception of taking BA in social sciences as questions are asked majorly from these subjects but you can have any degree of your own choice and then opt for exam . But for exam you must have knowledge about Indian History , Political Science , Indian Geography , General Studies and Current affairs , so apart from degree programs of your own choice you can join online coachings or coachings near by your college or even prepare on your own through different books , websites and YouTube etc.

see you may apply for upsc civil service exam which ever course you may pursue in your graduation course, however upsc exam is one of the toughest exam in india and requires hard and sincere preparation, you may go for general bsc course in streams like zoology, microbiology, bio technology, or may go for b.a in history or geography.
