I am completed btech in IT. MBA in marketing with IT or HR with marketing which is best option is good for me?
I feel that I can be the best one to answer you this since I have completed my graduation in IT and I am currently in the final year of MBA in Human Resource Management.
The query or the confusion that you have is quite normal since Marketing and HR are two different fields and the jobs associated with them are also very different. But firstly you have to understand the fact that if you are pursuing any of the two, you will have to be good at selling. For marketing, sales forms a pivotal role. You have to be convincing enough the customers so that they buy your product. It will definitely include B2B and B2C sales.
For Human Resources, sales come where Talent acquisition comes to play. Where in core sales, you have to sale your product to the customers, in Human Resources you have to sell your organisation or rather the job roles to the prospective future employees. You have to be convincing enough in this case too as to why they would prefer to work for your employer and not join any other company.
Now students mainly prefer an MBA over other exams due to the hefty salary packages. Statistics says that sales roles will provide you with a better a better compensation package than any other role. Core Marketing roles are less and most colleges will provide you with a sales role. Though there will not be any dearth of money, there will certainly be a lot of travelling as you have to meet face to face with dealers, whole sellers and shopkeepers. There will be deadlines to meet and so you are definitely lose your good night sleep for some nights. Human Resource on the other hand is purely an office job while you have to network with everyone, organise events, show some creativity in designing salary packages, job descriptions, map the competencies required for leadership roles and of course try to keep every employee happy and satisfied. There will be deadlines but if you can manage time well, you feel definitely find it easy to meet them rather than meeting sales deadline. Talent acquisition may have some work regarding approaching candidates, cold calls, filling up vacant positions. Coming to the salary perspective, it will be relatively less compared to sales but ultimately it all boils down to the salary structure where a company decides how much to be allotted in the variable pay and fixed pay.
Finally, it all comes down to you. You have to choose wisely as to which role you want to jump into since you will be the one who will be toiling from dawn to dusk and try to make profits for our company. If you want to maintain a good work life balance then according to me, Human Resource roles would suit you better than Marketing roles as you will be get sufficient amount of time to spend with your family. Besides Marketing and Sales would require you to learn local languages as people would not be comfortable to converse with you in English. Some companies will also keep the criteria of knowing to drive a car or a bike in their job description as marketing and sales roles will require considerable travelling both locally and within states. Having a background in Information Technology would make it easy for you to use the CRM, HRIS software and most work will be done by Microsoft Excel. So irrespective of choosing any specialisation, be proficient in MS EXCEL. And in the end, you have to weigh the pros and cons of each specialisation and choose wisely because the ultimate motive of every human is to stay happy and satisfied. So getting stuck with some kind of work which is not motivating for you, for the next 25-30 years would ultimately take a toll on your physical and emotional well being.
