I am currently working in a mnc as a mechanical engineer. Will my experience be considered in MBA? If yes then which stream should i take?
Hey Arijit!
Your Mechanical Engineering profile will be best suited with the role of Data Research Management, Consultant in Electrical based companies like Shell, ONGC etc. So, you can study Marketing under which courses like Business Research Management will come up which you can relate to Data Research management in a company related to power and energy. Secondly, Consultancy job will be another domain where you have opportunities. Then, operations and supply chain management can be another field, where you can relate your past academic courses with MBA. The best college for operations and supply chain management is IIMB. For Business Research Management course under Marketing is IIFT. Best wishes for your future.
Hello Arjit,
Your work experience will surely give you a edge over others in terms of your GD - PI score and in placement.
Work experience greater than one year is generally considered by the College for evaluation and by company in final placements.
Since, you're an engineer Stream like supply chain provided by IIM C, else operation provided by most of IIM where you could use your knowledge.
Data Analyst, Busines Analyst are also some of main stream profile that are being offered.
There are many colleges which offer specialisation particularly, but for engineer particularly Operation profile will be useful one and IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Mumbai, NITIE , etc are well known for engineers management course
Hope it clears your doubts.
All the best
Hi Arijit,
Yes you experience would definitely be considered for MBA. You can select any stream of your choice or you can do MBA in general managemnt also. Some colleges like IIM's does not offer degree in any specialisation. You can select the subjects in second year based on your choice. It can be mix of subjects from different streams.
In every field you can utilise your current knowledge. You will be handling some problems or cases where your prior knowledge will give you a different perspective from others.
But still if you want to utilise your knowledge you can go for MBA in operations. Somer of the good colleges for operations are IIT, Bombay, NITIE, Mumabai, IIT delhi.
So everything now boils down to your interest. If you are not sure of it, you can decide it in second year based on your interest in subjects in first year (First year will be same for everyone and subjects from every specialisation will be taught).
All the best
Hello,
First of all, I would recommend you to not worry because most of the candidates who come for pursuing MBA do not really hold a very relevant work experience. Most of them have technical background and thus experience in that.
Nextly, your work experience will be considered valid if
a.) It is 12 months or greater
b.) You hold a written proof via your manager / or concerned employee either on mail or on official letter pad.
c.) proofs like ITR, etc might be asked too
Finally, answering your question of which stream should you take. Well an answer to this question is your interest. If you are still interested in the same technical field that you are currently in, then operations management is a close stream. Top colleges for the same are:
a. IIM Bangalore
b. IIM Calcutta
c. NITIE Mumbai
d. IIT Mumbai
e. XLRI Jamshedpur
However, if you are not sure of what stream you might find interesting, other options are marketing, human resources (not at all pertaining to your field), consulting ( you need to have knowledge of all the fields ) , finance ( this is a stream that enthuses several mechanical engineers) and IT (you might get into this too).
I would suggest you to currently focus on getting a cream college (preferably IIMs ) by scoring nothing less than 99.5 percentile which will open options for you.
All the best!!
Since you are an engineer the best field to go for is Operations Management considering you want to use your existing knowledge as well.
And definitely yes your experience will be considered not only for getting in good colleges but also at the time of internships and final placements for any Mba college that you join in the future.
The Best colleges to join for Mba in OM are as followed.
- XLRI Jamshedpur.
- IIM Bangalore.
- IIM Kolkata.
- NITIE Mumbai.
- SPJIMR Mumbai.
- IIT Mumbai.
- SIOM Nashik.
- IIT Delhi.
- IIT Madras
- SP Jain Institute of Management and Research - Mumbai
- IIT - Kharagpur
Hope this Helps.
All the Best.

Hi Arijit,
In every B-School a Work Experience is always an added advantage. The fact that you have worked shows that you are habituated to the corporate culture and know how the business operates. In B-school education, which is primarily case based, you will be able to relate most of the thing to your experience and hence excel in it.
Since you are a mechanical engineer with a core experience an MBA with majors in operations will fetch you you really good job opportunities at the end of MBA. You can aim for roles like Operations Manager, Product Manager, supply chain management etc.
In this regard, for CAT I suggest you to aim at aroun 98%ile so that you can get into NITIE which is supposed to be the best B-School for MBA in operations. The best roles go to this college when in comes to SCM (to my knwoledge). However, this should be your target after the top 6 IIMs (BLACKI). You can also target SP Jain.
After joining MBA, you can also specialise in Finace, Marketing etc as per your wish if you like them. Work experience is always an advantage.
I would suggest you to specialise in Operations.
All the best
