Weapon Engineering is a specialized field in mechanical and electrical engineering but it is not a common field of study. It draws from a number of engineering disciplines and is a super specialization. This course can only be pursued at postgraduate level and requires a thorough knowledge of mechanics, mechatronics, electronics and sometimes computer science , in that order.

Reason: Weapons engineering is not just about designing and developing weapons but it also encompasses testing these weapons and maintaining these weapons throughout their life cycle. The latter requires skills that can only be expected from a mechanical or mechatronic graduate will have. More importantly, there are several types of weapons. It could be small arms like assault rifles and RPGs, it could be heavy weapons like howitzers & MLRS, or it can be cruise missiles and Tactical Ballistic Missiles(TBMs), fighter aircraft, submarines, or even the whole nine. Basically, you will need skills from Electrical, Mechanical, and Computer Engineering to flourish in this business.

But it wouldn't be much of a problem if you're applying into the course as an AE graduate so chill.

There's also a fact that there aren't many universities/institutions that offers this course. The colleges in India offering this course includes:

  • Defense Institute of Armament Technology, Pune
  • Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune, Maharashtra
  • College of Military Engineering, Pune

Once you complete the postgraduation in weapon engineering from any of the above colleges, you can set foot in this field by joining any of these:

  • Defense Research and Development Organisation(DRDO)
  • Weapon engineer specialist
  • Ordnance factory
  • MES (Military engineering services)
  • DIAT

Whatever weapons industry India has, it all fall directly in the hands of the public sector. You have the gun factories, ordinance, and armament factories, all of which are under the ministry of science and tech or defense. Also, these organizations have their own independent recruitment process.

As for salary , you can easily make a lot even at entry level. Moreover, since employment is mostly in the military, you will have the luxury of a number of perks as well.

Follow these steps:

  • Complete your graduation in AE.
  • Appear for GATE as the admission to above colleges offering WE is possible through GATE only. Get a good rank, around 500 if you're general, and at least clear the gate screening test. After that, there will be an interview round too in some of the departments.
  • Now you're done with your education. Time for recruitment. Refer to the following link and you'll have a fair idea about how to clear the screening tests to get into any of the PSUs.

I hope this helps!

Mam this is really very helpful .thank you so much but I have some more queries also.Mam you said that I should do GATE for that but which paper I should attempt GATE from aerospace or GATE from mechanical. After completing postgraduation in WE you suggested some organisation in which I can join but what is their recruitment process means any exam or anything elseCan I join those organisations on the basis of my graduation course.if yes then howAnd last you said that it will be easy for me to get into WE because it needs knowledge from different departments but how since aerospace is very different from those

Your welcome, Arpit. Here you have your answer,You can go for either. It's better if you go for mechanical, but it is a different stream and you'd be required to put more efforts as it can degrade your performance and thus your overall rank which is the highlighting factor for admission. That's why, unless you're absolutely sure you can attempt ME paper just as well as you'd AE then only you should go for it, otherwise do Gate AE. There wouldn't be much difference, you'd still be eligible to apply for your desired course. The thing to worry about is tha some departments in DRDO do not accept AE and prefer ME/EE. There wouldn't be very frequent recruitment too. DRDO: GATE scores, PI and GD. Sometimes they conduct exams too so one can't be too sure. Mostly its former procedure. OFs: IES (posts for ME, Civil, EE and IE only, but any engineering grad can appear for exam so you can too) and PI. MES: Entrance through IES. You can appear for mechanical or electronics exam. There are 50% seats for civilians and 50% for military based so expect a lot of competition. DIAT: It's a defense college in Pune which has several courses primilarly based on WE for which you, as an AE grad, are eligible to apply if you have 55% aggregate in BE. Yes, AE is different than ME and EE but AE graduates generally have good aptitude in maths, physics, and mechanics (aviation) hence they are generally accepted. Even PhD scholars in physics and chemistry (cuz bombs) can apply for WE related post in DRDO.Yes, you can join DIAT after your graduation. It's a college but maybe if field of research interests you then consider it a job. For most, its all about your performance in EE and then interview. By the way, you can also take CAD for weapon designing. Look it up, maybe it will interest you.I hope I'm clear to you.

MES is Military Engineering Services. The only way to get a job here is through IES which is nothing but Indian Engineering Services Exam. This exam is conducted by UPSC to recruit aspiring engineers for various posts in Indian Engineering Services. Like UPSE exam for IAS, IPS and so on, this is for engineering posts in the public sector. MES comes under it and recruitment is based on IES rank. IES, like Gate, has several papers for different but limited streams which includes Civil, Electronics, Mechanical, and Industrial. Not even Computer Science. But like Gate, any engineering grad from a recognized university/college can apply for the exam and appear for any of the four exams. MES will select people who have appeared for MEE/EEE, of course, based on the rank. So here's what you need to do to get a job in MES: Complete your graduation in AE, appear for IES exam, clear the exam with good rank (under 300) and you'll probably make it. There are only 50% seats allocated for civilians (i.e. those who are not from army background) out of the total number of seats, which is why you should spend quality time in your preparation. In case it is MES you're going for, take Mechanical exam. Alongside appear for GATE too, for ME. In case you don't make it in MES, you'd still have chances in OFs and DRDO (which accepts GATE scores).

It depends on you really. In the end, it's you who are going to prepare for the exam so set your time table accordingly. I can easily advice you to study for 6 hours a day which is easier said than done. I can only tell you the syllabus and links which will help your preparation. For IES:https://gradeup.co/prepare-for-ies-exam-without-coaching-i-d230eff5-5a14-11e6-8903-b4a73632da52https://unacademy.com/lesson/how-to-crack-upsc-ies-2018-preparation-and-strategy/U3LXM1BUhttps://ieshelpline.wordpress.com/Start by analyzing previous years question papers, type of question asked, hotspots, syllabus (which is readily available online), cutoff marks in all stages, and others parameters. You have to be aware of how much to score to get a good rank and how to score that in the worst case scenario. I've shared a link (Wordpress one) which will help you a lot in learning about the experience.Follow Gate Syllabus, and practice question papers of IES alongside. There isn't a stark difference in the syllabus. For GATE:https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/how-prepare-for-gate-without-coachinghttps://nptel.ac.in/http://gateacenotes.blogspot.com/2016/10/gate-mechanical-ace-academy-notes.htmlPrevious year questions/ question papers (refer Edurev for previous year papers, extra notes, and mock papers. It's available on Google Playstore) are important. You can't ignore this. Online lectures from MIT, IIT and so on. There are plenty of tutorials covering the syllabus that can be found on Youtube itself. Buy a book or two for preparation. Nothing beats that.Check these links out, this should be enough to help you get started.
