Firstly application for PhD. Will be put up in the official website and you have to apply for it.

Preliminary shortlisting will done based on the marks (UG/PG/Gate as applicable) as declared by the candidate in the application.

Later there will be a screening test and based on that you will be taken into for PhD. As of 2018 the admission is over and you can apply.for next time.

Dear Venkatesh, the minimum required academic qualification for pursuing full time Ph.D in IIT Madras is enlisted here:

1. You should have a Master's degree in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record or a Master's degree by Research in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record.

2. Candidates with Master's degree in Sciences with a good academic record and of exceptional merit where elihible, for the relevant Engineering discipline and with a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR NET/NBHM or equivalent qualigiation in the relevant area tenable for the year of registration.

3. Candidates who have qualified for the award of Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology with exceptionally good academic recird in an eligible discipline will be considered for direct admission to Ph.D programme as a regular full time scholar subject to following conditions:

A. B. Tech degree holder of Centrally Funded Technical Institute with a minimum CGOA of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale or with a valid GATE score.

B. Bachelor's degree holder in Engineering/Technology with 8 CGPA or equivalent from any other University and having a valid GATE score.

C. Bachelor's degree holder in Engineering/Technology from a reputed R&D organization and having a proven research record.
