I am from commerce stream...if I want to choose my career in mass communication..Then what should I do for that?

A mass communication course studies how a person/organization/entity could disseminate information and make it reach the general public through newspapers, books, magazines, websites, blogs, radio, film and television. It focuses on mass media, the information being transmitted and its effects on the recipients.


There are numerous 3 year undergraduate Mass communication Courses after 12th. They are divided into degree courses, diploma courses, and certificate courses. The course consists of branches like journalism, PR, advertising and mass media.


Interests / Skills Required for  Mass Communication Specialist:

  • The most basic skill required in the field of mass communication is advanced communication and writing ability.
  • Students must have a flair for the language in which they wish to pursue mass communication programmes.
  • Graduates in this field must have the ability to network and create media contacts in order to get latest insights.
  • Ability to work in rough conditions and under pressure is another necessary requirement.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • 10+2 passed (any stream- Science/Commerce/Arts) from a recognized board with minimum 50% marks is the qualification required to pursue mass communication courses. Although cut off lists before admissions usually are high, so aim at scoring 90% and above in 12th.
  • Some colleges grant admission on merit basis and some on the basis of entrance exams. Delhi University conducts Common Entrance Test in Journalism (CET) for all undergraduate course. Similarly Symbiosis College conducts Symbiosis Entrance Test  (SET)


Fee Structure:

The fees of government colleges will vary from Rs. 11,659 to Rs. 1,10,000 for the entire course. However, fees for mass communication courses offered by private universities will vary from Rs. 2.5 to Rs. 3.5 lakh for the entire course.

With electronic and paper media being the main pillars of Indian communication, there is a lot of scope in the journalism and mass communication industry. There are numerous media houses, news channels, magazines and newspapers that hire mass communication graduates.

Apart from that, you can also apply for roles like copywriter, content writer, blogger, etc. after completing your graduation in this field. Following are some of the highest paying profiles in this field:

TV Anchor, News Editor, Senior Journalist, Junior Journalist, Screen Writer, Editor, Editor in Chief, Camera Man, Assistant Director .

Hello Chitra. If you want to pursue your career in mass communication, you can opt for BAJMC course in any state or private university. You can give their entrance and then follow the entrance procedure as prescribed by the university. I hope you found this answer helpful. Good luck.
