I am in class 11 science student.I have a strong desire to discover the secret of space and want as a professional space observer .what should I pursue further? to fullfill it ? to which institution i should get admitted after 12??
Greetings, aspirant!
A curiousity about space and the passion to learn more about it can help you make a career in astronomy & Astrophysics.
If you wish to do make a career in it, you should start by preparing for the entrance examinations that are required to join the top Institutes in India that offer bachelor's, and subsequently a master's degree and a PhD education in astronomy such as
- IISc, Bangalore (JEE Main, GATE)
- TIFR, Mumbai (GATE/NET/JEST)
- IIST, Trivandrum (JEE Main, GATE)
- Indian center for space physics, Kolkata (WBJEE, RET, GATE)
- Indian institute of astrophysics, Bangalore (GATE, JEST)
These are some of the best Institutions that can help you make a career in astronomy. The entrance exams that you need to appear for in order to join these institutions, is given beside them.
It's nothing short of a Herculean task to get a master's and PhD in astronomy or astrophysics, but if you wish to join a reputed organization such as the ISRO, it's a basic minimum requirement for a research scientist.
Even though it's difficult, it's not impossible. You can definitely join ISRO if you're dedicated enough.
Hope this information helps
Best of luck!!
Hello Aspirant,
India now ranks as a topmost power in space sciences and technology.
There are various career option in this field with top courses available after 12th from Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST). Ad mission into Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) is made on the basis of ranks obtained in the Joint entrance Examination (IIT JEE) conducted by IITs.
The minimum eligibility criteria for joining bachelor programs in Space Science at IIST is 10+2 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Top colleges are:-
1. Birla Institute of Technology, jharkhand
2. IIST, Thiruvanathapuram
3. Ary abhatta knowledge of Institute science and technology.
4. Indian Institute of science, Banglore.
And many more. .
Hope this helps:)
After 12th: You can get into IIST (Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology) for their Undergraduate programmes. The admission is based on JEE Advanced scores. Which means you need to have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in 10+2. You can pick any of their 4 year Bachelor programmes like B.Tech in Physical Sciences, B.Tech in Avionics and B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering, etc. Or you can also pick up their 5 year Integrated courses in Master of Science in Astronomy and AstroPhysics, Master of Technology in Earth System Science, Master of Science in Solid State Physics and Master of Science in Optical Engineering, etc.
Opportunities are amazing for academically brilliant candidates. With a CGPA of 7.5 or higher, subject to the availability of vacancies, you get placed in ISRO. Aero and Avio graduates have better prospects even outside ISRO.
After B.Tech: IIST also offers Postgraduate Programmes like:
M.Tech in Soft Computing & Machine Learning
M.Tech in RF & Microwave Engineering
M.Tech in Geo informatics
M.Tech in Optical Engineering
M.Tech in Machine Learning & Computing
M.Tech in Solid State Technology
M.Tech in VLSI & Microsystems
M.Tech in Materials Science & Technology, etc.
Opportunities depend upon ISRO Placements conducted by centralised recruitment committee.
Alternatively, you can take up AstroPhysics in your Graduation. B.Sc Astronomy is also one of the courses that allows you to study stars.
