Hi Ayansh,
There are 2 paths you could follow for the preparation of GRE:
1. Take up a GRE coaching from a renowned coaching institute. This can take from 1-3 months depending on the coaching program you select.
2. Self study for the GRE. This will take 2-4 months depending on the amount of time you devote to preparation. On average, 2 hours a day will be sufficient to complete your preparation in under 3 months.
Month 1:
For the self study option, the best preliminary vocabulary preparation method would be to read the book 'Word Power Made Easy' by Norman Lewis. This is easily available in bookstores and online in under INR 200.
For further vocabulary preparation, revise the Barron’s 333 high frequency word list, the Manhattan 1000 word list and the Barron’s 1100 word list. Out of these, the 333 word list is the most important and integral for getting a good GRE score.
Month 2:
The most important aspect of GRE preparation is practice. The GRE is often considered to a be test not for a student’s scholastic ability but for his ability to take the GRE. Therefore, after 1 month of vocabulary preparation, you should start doing 15-30 verbal questions per day in order to ensure that you achieve a good score.
For quantitative preparation, only a 10th grade mathematical level is required. Therefore, you will not have to do much prior preparation apart from going through the official ETS GRE guide book. After this, you can start with 15-30 practice questions per day.
Month 3:
Finally, in the last month, you should focus on sample papers and preparation for the Analytical Writing section. This section requires you to write two essays which are assessed on a 6.0 scale. Reading sample essays and practicing 4-10 essays should be enough preparation for this section.
Your in the prime time of your life. Start your coaching henceforth to ace GRE. The vocabs are fair enough but the mathematical competencies are tough and need rigorous practice.
All the best

GRE - graduate record examination is one the most popular test for university admission for PhD and MS program. GRE requires persistent and tenacious preparation. It is a dry and boring exam, but then again when is an exam ever interesting and fun, right?! Although, the good thing about GRE is that you don’t need to sit down with your books and slog it out, like we do for any competitive exam in India. On the rather contrary, it requires a continuous and subtle study process. The plus points to the GRE is that not only is it easier to score than any competitive exam you’ll ever face in India at the graduate level; it is also much less competitive.
How to prepare for verbal -There is absolutely no point in mugging up 3500 words when chances are that you might not get any one of them. Do around 700-1000 words from the frequent word lists that you can easily find online. It is more than enough.
• When you have fifteen days left, practice 2 RC’s every day. Familiarize yourself with the line of thought required to answer most of the GRE RC’s. They are quite direct, and the answer is present within the RC. A little bit of practice and you can make this your strong suit.
• If you are aiming for 160+ in verbal, learn vocabulary with the help of connecting words with each other. If you will keep in mind in isolation you can but do it.
For quantetive sections- As most of the GRE test takers from India are from Engineering or Economics backgrounds, the quant section is not much of a challenge. However, taking this section lightly can prove to be fatal for any one of us, as considering the deductive and empirical nature of our majors, we are expected to score well in this section.
If you are aiming for a top 20 college, anything north of 165 would suffice, however, a 170 would be a cherry on top of your most probable stellar application. However, If you struggle with the quant section, there is no need to worry. GRE doesn’t require amazing mathematical techniques or skills. They can be learnt or put into use. Practice is the only key to success. Practice will pace for way for the success..
