What your brother is saying is absolutely true because without mastering the basics, it is difficult to clear IES paper and even if you do clear it, how will you manage engineering services without knowledge of very basic concepts. GATE exam is meant for doing M.Tech in various domains of engineering. So, if you want to study more, you can surely opt for it. There are many candidates that apply for IES after completing their master's degree so this is not an issue rather it will benefit you!
