I got 85% in total in exams nd 81% in best four. And I got 746 rank in IP university for BA English course. Can I try into du too?
I am student currently pursuing English honours from du itself, I will like to inform you that English honours is merit based degree program. There is no entrance exam as such CATE for the admission.
Since you have mentioned that your best four score is in 80s, getting a seat in du is difficult. The cutoffs for English honours are usually very high ranging from 90-96% for general category. You can check the previous years cutoff trends on www.du.ac.in.
In case you belong to reserved category, you can easily get through the process and grab a seat.
Even if you belong to some sports or extra curricular quota you hv fair chances to get into DU.
It will be advisable to do the registration for DU and wait and check the cuttoffs, you might have a chance to get in there.
All the best.
Hi, The Department of English, Delhi University, conducts an entrance test every year - DU CATE Exam. The test is also known as Delhi University Common Aptitude Test for English. The University conducts this entrance test for the admission of students to its undergraduate level programme – BA (Hons) English. The entrance test is conducted at 12 affiliated colleges of the University. The SC/ST/PH/foreign students need not appear for this entrance test, because they are admitted directly to the course, according to the rules of the University. For the final selection, candidates’ marks in the qualifying examination are also determined along with the merit in the common aptitude test.
There are some eligibility criterion that you need to follow i order to be eligible to appear for the test:
- Candidates should have passed 10+2 from a recognised board.
- Candidates must pass 10+2 with not less than 60% marks in English; 45% marks in aggregate in the qualifying exams for general category and 40.5% for OBC
Syllabus for the test is as follows:
- Vocabulary
- Passage
- Meanings
- Idoms etc
The exam is divided into 2 parts. First part consists of Objective Questions with no negative markings. Candidates whopass part one of the test are eligible for part 2 which included Subjective/Descriptive Questions. The exam is set to be conducted in first week of June and the results for the same will be out a week later.

Getting admission to DU on merit basis might be difficult for you as cut offs BA english are quite high and rarely falls below 88%. So if you wish to take admission in DU for English Honours, I would recommend you to do so through Entrance test as marks of the test and further counselling session are also considered and not just best of four percentage scored in the qualifying exam.
Good luck
I m a du student pursuing the same course and hence firmly say so.
Hey Harshii,
To be honest, you may have low chances of getting admission in the top most colleges of DU like thw north and South campus colleges as they have really high cut offs but there are many colleges affiliated to DU that offer the same course and you may have a chance of getting admission in these colleges.
You also have not mentioned your category, which may benefit you. Also check for different quotas that DU provides the students during admission on the official website. If you find yourself eligible for any of them then, your chances of getting into DU will probably increase.
All the best :)
