There are few seats that remain vacant under different categories such as OBC, SC/ST and so on, so those seats are filled by providing admission to the students of that respective category under preparatory course in which those student get prepared for studying in IITs and this course is of one year duration and if one completes this course successfully will be declared as pass and will get direct admission to that branch in which he too the preparatory course. The rank through which admissions are made for above course is called as Preparatory rank.
