Dear Aspirant, Percentage of class 12th are not important anymore in respect to getting admission in an engineering college. However, above 65% is safe, for some state colleges might not entertain below that threshold.
Now, to pursue B.Tech in India from MECHANICAL ENGINEERING or any other stream, You first has to give JEE examination. JEE is conducted in two phases, one in January and other in April. A Student can give any one or both of them depending upon what suits them, but only 3 attempts are allowed, so use them wisely.
JEE-MAIN targets all the NITs, GFTIs and various other state government technical colleges. This exam is conducted by NTA( National Testing Agency ) . This exam consists of 90 questions worth 360 total marks divided into three sections of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics each carrying equal weightage i.e, 120 marks.

Cutoff for the exam is as follows(NOTE: These are not exactly the same every year and may vary with the level of difficulty of the exam, however, these are quite close approximations from last few years' trends):
However, to get a good college(like NITs) one must at least secure 170+ marks. After results, NTE declares rank list in the month of June and students can then apply for various technical institutes all around the country according to their marks and preferences. Earlier this rank list depends upon the 12th percentage too but from 2017 rank is independent of 12th percentage. Depending upon your rank and your preference order you'll be allotted a college.
NOTE: Only the students who clear the cutoff of JEE-MAIN are eligible for JEE-ADVANCED.
NOTE: Counselling is not a one time process and continues for up to four rounds. If you are not satisfied with the college fills the counseling for the next round.
