First of all, if you think that you want to be an IAS then I will suggest you to go for Bachelor In Arts.

You can take majors Political science or sociology.

This subjects help one to crack any government exams like UPSC, SSC CGL and State Public Comission Exams and RRB too.

This subjects are very informative and easy to understand.

I will say if you belong from Arts background then please go for it but if you are from other background like Science, I will suggest that think twice or thrice or hundred times before changing streams.

UPSCs syllabus is unrecognizable and it changes with time.

So. work hard and start reading newspaper and always motive yourself.

Then you have to give your UPSC pre and main along with Interview.

First of all, congratulations on the early realisation of your goal. It is a great thing that you have decided your target and want to go about it in a very planned manner. Civil services exams are one of the most difficult exams in India, not only because it wants the candidate to study each topic very deeply, but also in terms of the fact that it takes a lot of consistency and patience to finally clear it with flying colors.

Talking of the course you should take up to reach your target, I would like to inform you that civil services examination does not ask for any particular proficiency in any particular course. It is entirely upto you to opt for whichever course you want to and the one which intetests you. Bear in mind that you will have to give more time to the preparation rather than keeping yourself occupied with graduation studies. Therefore any course which according to your interest would give a stress free graduation will do the job well. I say this because preparing for civil services requires a lot of time and hard work which can only be possible if there is no pressure from your college/university.

Distance learning programs can also be a good option for you as there will not be any problems of attending daily classes which in turn will give you ample of time for civil services preparation.

UPSC is a great choice and you are certainly thinking on the right track since you want to begin with your preparation. It is a highly respectable, rewarding and well-paying job but is also one of the toughest exams to crack.People prepare for a solid year or two before getting through.

IAS recruitment involves three stages basically ; cracking the prelims, then mains and finally the interview. All of the three require dedication and planned study.

Firstly, since you are done with your 12th ; decide what subject you want to take up for your future studies ( given that your absolute choice is IAS). people usually go for Sociology, Public administration or History in Mains as these are said to be scoring. That said, there are also candidates from other subjects who have passed the exams with flying colors. I would recommend you take up a bachelors only after careful consideration as it will give you a solid foundation for your future studies.

Students also go for a year or two of coaching to prepare for civils however that is not solely enough. you need to be updated with current affairs. Read the newspaper regualrly and practice writing long answers. It will take you a long way.

You will have to give UPSC exam and the only eligibility requirement for exam is do graduation in the field of your interest. Last year students of graduation can also apply for the same exam.
