To get admission in M.tech , students have to appear for GATE exam. and in GATE exam , you have to attempt the question paper of your choice . Now as you have done your study of engg in Mechanical branch .. that's why ..it's natural that you'll attempt ME paper .. and by attempting ME paper , you can't do M.Tech for Food Technology .

Also ,there is a second  paper choice , but .. there is certain restrictions on paper selection .You can get that details from the official website .
