The first and foremost thing you need to do is read different essays. Think on each of them, where you agree or disagree with the writer. If you were to write on the same topic what would your approach have been, what perspective would you like to bring to it.

Coming to vocabulary, you can improve on it only by reading widely on an array of topics, either from newspapers, magazines, novels etc. While reading, note down every word you dont know the meaning of, find the meaning from a dictionary and make a note of it. Also download a good dictionary app and subscribe to "A word a day". Learn the new word and try to use it.

If as a habit you use a word multiple times while writing, thesaurus is the key to improve your vocabulary. Find out alternate words for each common word you use, make a list of all of them and try to implement them in your writing.

Depending on the topic you are going to write on, if possible incorporate famous quotes which are related to the subject. Ofcourse you can refer to a quote only if you have read well on the specific topic or subject.

An essay should have a good introduction which can capture the attention of the reader. You may begin it with a quote to drive a point, if applicable.

Always have a conclusion to your essay, in a short and concise sentence to let the reader understand what you are trying to convey.
