S Hariharasudhan you have decent academic records. Now to join any of the IIMs first of all you will need to give CAT exam and score atleast above 95 percentile to get a call from any IIM. To get calls from old IIMs like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta you need to score atleast above 99.7 percentile. Then to get calls from rest of the old IIMs like IIm Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, IIM Shillong you need to score atleast above 98 percentile and finally to get calls from all new IIMs and ultra new IIMs you need to get atleast 95+ percentile.

But scoring only will not make you get calls from IIMs as there are many other parameters involved to get a call for second round of WAT and interview. After the CAT exam result, all the colleges in which you have applied including IIMs makes a merit list to call students for the second round of interview, GD and WAT which is made in the basis of your aggregate score and which is based on different parameters such as CAT marks, 10th, 12th and graduation percentage, work experience, engineer or non-engineer, gender etc. whose weightage vary according to different colleges.

Then after you go through the second round of interview and WAT another merit list is made on the basis of the new aggregate score which also consists of the interview, GD and WAT marks. Generally, in this aggregate score interview and CAT marks have the highest weightage. Weightages of academic record is further reduced and you can catch up easily with your excellent performance in WAT and interview.

So, this is an overall long and hectic process but you will get to know about it in detail later when you will become the part of the process.

Right now the essential thing is to prepare for CAT'18 which is the first step in order to get into any IIMs and the most difficult step.

Feel free to ask if you have any more queries. All the best!!

IIM-CAT is the MBA entrance exam for all the IIMs and other top MBA colleges. All the 20 IIMs offer admission to their flagship MBA programmes by conducting a Common Admission Test IIM-CAT every year. Considered as the largest MBA entrance test, IIM-CAT 2017 has attracted registration from 2.31 lakh candidates.

Admission in IIMs involves 3 step process:

  • Step-1: Appear in CAT 2017
Those who want to pursue management course PGP 2018-20 programme from IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta or other IIMs must have appeared in Common Admission Test (CAT) 2017.

  • Step-2: Shortlisting for final admission round
After declaration of CAT 2017 result in January 2018, on the basis of CAT 2017 exam scores candidates are shortlisted for next admission round by individual IIMs. While comparatively newer IIMs declare the 1st stage shortlists on the basis of CAT scores, older IIMs also take into account the other parameters at the 1st stage shortlist.

  • Step-3: Final Admission- WAT & PI round
All the shortlisted candidates shall have to appear in the Written Ability Test (WAT) followed by Personal Interview (PI). On the basis of their performance in PI round, weightage awarded to CAT scores, academic profile & diversity, work experience and gender diversity, final merit list will be generated and admission offers will be made.

  • Common Admission Process (CAP) 2018 by 11 New IIMs
The common WAT and PI round, known as CAP 2018, for 11 new IIMs namely IIM Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy,Udaipur and 5 newest IIMs - IIM Amritsar, IIM BodhGaya, IIM Jammu, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Sirmaur, will be coordinated by IIM Rohtak. These 11 IIMs will not conduct their final admission round separately and on the basis of scores obtained in CAP 2018 alongwith their other individual admission components, will prepare the merit list to make admission offer to the candidates.

  • IIM Nagpur and IIM Visakhapatnam to conduct own final admission round

IIM Nagpur and IIM Visakhapatnam will not participate in CAP 2018 and will conduct their own final admission round to make admission offer to the students for admission 2018-20. The admission offers will be generated on the basis of merit lists prepared on the basis of CAT scores, Academic profile, Work experience and gender diversity in accordance with the weightage awarded to each of these factors.

  • Common Admission Process (CAP) by new IIMs
The WAT and PI round for IIM Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy and Udaipur and few other newest IIMs will be coordinated by one these IIMs. For 2016 admission IIM Kashipur coordinated the CAP. For 2016 CAP also included IIM Amritsar, BodhGaya and Sambalpur. So instead of 6 IIMs there were 9 IIMs who participated in Common Admission Process (CAP) 2016. For admission 2017 IIM Rohtak coordinated the CAP for 9 IIMs.

  • New IIMs offer admission without GD/PI
The newest IIMs like IIM Nagpur, IIM Sirmaur, IIM Jammu may not conduct GD/PI for final admission. The admission offers are generated on the basis of merit lists prepared on the basis of CAT scores, Academic profile, Work experience and gender diversity in accordance with the weightage awarded to each of these factors.

if you clear the exam so then you have to give GD&PI.
