Dear Shruti,
You can opt for JEE mains the next year. If you clear jee mains successfully you could write jee advanced. Theres nothing like you can only attempt JEE mains. Many students take a year drop to get into IITs, NITs etc. Originally every candidate has a maximum of three attempts for JEE Main. Candidates can appear twice for the entrance test in a year according to new pattern. So this is used in correlation with the original number of attempts, from 2019 onwards, JEE Main number of attempts in total will be six. A candidate gets a maximum of two attempts in consecutive years to appear for JEE advanced.
Hope this helps!
All the best!
