Hi Shourya,

Often candidates face a dilemma of which specialisation to choose for their MBA course. This decision is as much important for their career forward as much as the institute for their MBA journey. It would serve as the foundation for their career. There are many renowned specialisations offered by B-Schools as well as many niche specialisations. Its upon the discretion of the individual to chose which one he would like to take forward to build his or her career. Some of the parameters that would help the student to make their choice easy are listed below,

Affinity of subjects

It is crucial to identify the subjects that are offered in the program that you chose to pursue. Chose the one in which you find more affinity and subjects you like are featured in that program. Personality

This will help an individual to chose his or her program better. If you are a number crunching personality, then Finance is where you want to go. But, if you are a more people’s people, then Human Resource will be a better choice. Although all the specialisations are interrelated, developing a specialised set of skills for a particular program will help you stand different from others.

Passion

One must know his passion and value it the most. There are many high paying jobs in the market, but individuals don’t find satisfaction in those. Hence it is advised that one must make the right choice for his career and regarding money, that can also be obtained if he is highly skilled and a developed professional.

Career Growth

One also has to make tough choices when it comes to selecting specialisation and growth. Joining an organisation where one’s respective stream is the main business driver for the success of the organisation and its growth is of utmost beneficial to both the individual and the organisation. Take for example, FMCG companies like HUL and P&G where Marketing and Operations typically drive the business. You always to be in these streams for better career growth. In companies like Airtel, Vodafone, the investments related to infrastructure were already done like tower installations, spectrum fee etc. So, more emphasis will be given to recovery of investment which can be done only through Marketing and acquiring more customers. Hence Marketing guys will get more prominence.

It’s completely alright if you are not good in finance. The world is not over for you and there’s no reason that you should stop yourself from pursuing an MBA. The various other MBA specialisations along with their attributes are given below,

Marketing

The marketing department plays a crucial role in any organisation as they are responsible for bringing in new businesses, growing the revenue, increasing market share and contributing to the company’s growth and profitability. Whether your interest area lies in market research or advertising or sales/distribution of FMCG (Fast moving consumer goods), consumer durables or you’d like to work in IT sales, media, marketing of various services, internet marketing, an MBA in marketing will give you the chance to explore jobs in a wide variety of sectors.

Human Resource

A specialisation in HR helps you understand how to acquire, manage and retain workforce within an organisation in a systematic and organised manner. It also involves managing relationships or any issues arising between the management and the employees.

Information Technology

The use of technology has extended to almost every sector and industry which is why there’s a growing demand for professionals with a combination of business and advanced technical expertise. The various areas that may be covered in this specialisation include systems analysis, network security, data analytics, supply chain management, e-business along with managerial decision-making as well as project management.

Consulting

Consulting is another favourite choice, perhaps a dream destination for some. The high-profile jobs offering fantastic salaries with perks and the opportunity to travel places is primarily responsible for the allure surrounding this profession. Those opting for this profession may be able to boast about the wide variety of projects they handle for various clients in a variety of industries or geographical locations. However, you need to examine the working hours as some of these areas may cause your work-life balance to go for a toss.

All the very best!!!
