Dear Aryan,

Hey,

The first step towards getting into the IIMs is taking the CAT exam.  The CAT 2020 is expected to be conducted on November 29 and the result will be announced in the first week of January 2021. The IIM admission process will begin soon with shortlisting of candidates for Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) round.

IIM Eligibility Criteria

IIM eligibility criteria is same as CAT eligibility criteria, i.e. atleast 50% marks in graduation. Those who are eligible to appear in CAT are eligible for admission to the IIMs. However, they have to meet a few other requirements for selection. Take a look at the IIM eligibility criteria below:

  • The basic IIM eligibility criteria is graduation with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC, ST and PWD/DA category)
  • Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification exam or awaiting their results, are also eligible to apply
  • To be eligible for IIM interview call, the candidates must meet the IIM shortlist/qualifying cut off
  • To expect interview call and participate in WAT/GD-PI, the candidates must meet the minimum IIM call cut off

IIM cut off refers to the minimum CAT score percentile, a candidate has to score in the CAT exam to be eligible for WAT-PI round of the institutes. The IIM cut offs are different for different categories of students. While for General category students, the minimum cut off percentile is 90-100, for reserved category students IIM cut off percentile is considerably low. The IIM cut offs are different campus wise. While for IIM Ahmedabad cut off for General category was 99-100 percentile in CAT 2019, CAT 2018 and CAT 2017; for IIM Calcutta it was around 92-99 percentile. The IIM CAT cut off percentile for IIMs varies slightly on yearly basis. And, this slight variation is due to several factors. Some of the determining factors that decide IIM CAT cut offs are:

  • Difficulty Level of CAT exam – If the standard of the test was difficult then the cut-off percentile for that session will be comparatively lower. This happens because of the lower average scores in the examination.
  • Number of students who took CAT – The final cut-off percentile for IIM would also depend on the number of students appearing in CAT. Higher the number, higher will be the qualifying cut-off, and vice versa.
  • Number of seats available – The number of available seats in a particular IIM can vary annually. Any increase or decrease in the number of available seats will directly reflect on the cut-off percentage required for IIM.
