Hello Jomson..

Thanks for contacting Careers360..

The best way to become a police officer is to make oneself as highly qualified as possible. What do I mean by this, you research the department you want to join. Find out what the minimum qualifications are and do whatever is required to meet these qualifications. Then, learn some special skills that make you more desireable than other candidates.

If the department you target requires you to have an associates degree or some amount of college, make sure you meet or exceed that standard. If they have physical fitness requirements make sure you can exceed the standard by a wide margin on your worst day. Do you have crappy credit? If so pay your debts off. If there are groups that do not speak english as a primary language in the area served by the department, You can really improve your employment chances by learning to speak the language. If you can learn to speak it fluently that is even better. If you are in college try to get an internship at the department you target for employment. It might be doing something like filing or dispatching which on their face do not look glamorous but they provide valuable opportunities for you to show your work ethic. If you can put yourself through a police academy you can make yourself much more employable because the hiring agency can put you directly into field training.

Some departments give military veterans an advantage in their testing, for example you might get 5 extra points added to your score for being a military veteran. You can triple up on this by joining the military as a military policeman or K9 handler or explosive ordinance disposal technician. This gives you law enforcement type experience and veteran points on civil service tests. Plus you get GI bill $ to provide you money while you pursue your college education or use the money to put yourself through a police academy.

Finally, if the department you target for employment has its own jail or dispatch center, dont be afraid to apply for a position as a dispatcher or jailer. These can be stepping stone positions to becoming a sworn officer. How so? While you are working one of these jobs, the department is learning about you. Are you reliable, do you obey the rules, do you show up on time, how do you handle stress? All these things can be observed while you work as a jailer or dispatcher. We hired about 7 to 10 jailers to be officers, and a couple dispatchers too.

All the best:)
