Dear candidate,

Aerospace Engineering is that branch of Engineering which imparts skills and knowledge of designing, manufacturing and maintenance of spacecraft, aircraft, missiles and weapons systems. A large part of Aerospace Engineering consists of Mechanical Engineering. The branch covers a wide range of topics including computer application, structures, mathematics, physics, drafting, electricity, robotics, aeronautics etc. It covers two aspects of engineering –Aeronautical Engineering and Astronomical Engineering.

Aerospace Engineering is one of the toughest branches of Engineering. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication to be able to make it big in this field of study. In India, Aerospace Engineering is one of the niche engineering branches among students. It offers lucrative and a fulfilling career.

Aerospace Engineering is a highly specialised technological field that requires overall excellence in mathematical, calculative and observational skill. Research in this field takes years to be completed, thus resilience and persistence are of much importance too. Here are a few essential qualities/skills to be a successful Aerospace Engineer:

  • Excellent academic background in Science stream

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills

  • Creativity and innovativeness viz designing the product

  • Eye for detail

  • Ability to work under pressure and long working hours

  • Scientific acumen

  • Physical stamina

  • Ability to work in a team and be able to lead a team

Aerospace Engineering: Eligibility Criteria

An Aerospace Engineering aspirant must meet the minimum eligibility criteria to be able to pursue the course. Check the minimum eligibility criteria for Aerospace Engineering below:

  • Minimum eligibility criteria for pursuing Aerospace Engineering is HSc or Class 12 pass with a minimum of 60 percent marks (55 per cent marks for SC/ST) in Science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Maths)

  • Since Aerospace Engineering is a highly specialized Engineering programme, most of the degree courses are offered at post graduate level. For this, the candidate is required to have 60 per cent marks (55 per cent marks for SC/ST) in Bachelor's degree (BE/B Tech or equivalent)

  • For admission to postgraduate and Doctoral programmes and research, GATE score is required

  • Candidates with 3-4 year degree in Engineering, technical diploma, 5-year Architecture, Postgraduates in Mathematics/Science/ Statistics/Computer Applications are also eligible to pursue Aerospace Engineering

  • If one aspires to join National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), US, they must be informed that NASA recommends a degree in a variety of disciplines, including biomedical engineering, ceramic engineering, chemistry, industrial engineering, materials engineering, metallurgy, optical engineering, and oceanography. PhD is highly recommended for those who want to join NASA.

Hope I answer your question and it's helpful.

All the best!
