UPSC examinations that occur in three stages: Preliminary, Mains and Personal Interview.

The Preliminary exams is just for the sake of qualifying to Mains. Your preliminary exam's score won't be considered in the final score. The final score consists of Mains and Personal Interview. Preliminary is an MCQ based exam whereas Mains exam is a full-fledged written exam with an optional subject.

One needs to have a graduation degree in any discipline from any recognized University to be eligible to write the UPSC examinations. You should choose a field of graduation that you are passionate about, in which your interest lies, and something that helps you in your preparation of UPSC exams as well, you can opt for a BA in History, Geography or Political Science. Even a BSc/BA in economics would be great too.

It is advisable to start your preparation from the very first year of graduation. Start with the basic NCERT books of Class VI-XII of History, Geography, Economics, and Science.

Slowly, build momentum and start with Indian Polity book by Lakshmikant. For a proper and full booklist head to Mrunal's blog or Unacademy's website (Roman Saini's lessons).

Develop a habit of reading The Hindu daily to be updated with current affairs. Read the Yojana Magazine regularly.

Five points you must follow to crack UPSC:

1. Syllabus prevents you to waste your energy somewhere else and keep you on track….train on track will definitely reach it’s destination…so always be in touch with syllabus ( Syllabus ).
2. Previous year question papers acts as compass, provides direction to your study…so always keep them with you. Analyse and practise them with time ( PREVIOUS YEARS QUESTION PAPERS ).
3. NCERT Books: Without reading these books you can’t develop your own understanding, this is basic knowledge you can’t skip. One important thing is that ‘All exam oriented publications and class notes are basically prepared from NCER books only’…so when you are using them means you are adopting their angle of interpretation of NCERT book and you will lose originality in your answer. So, go through NCERT books…and insure your success ( NCERT BOOKS ). So, attending tuition is not essential thing but reading NCERT books is essential thing.
4. One magazine and two national newspapers to update your understanding and increase awareness about happenings in world. The exam is focusing on live issues and contemporary problems in India and world… (Suggested magazine is ‘Civil Service Chronicle’ and news papers is ‘The Hindu’).
5. Read Economic Survey ( Economic survey Vol. I , II ), India yearbook ( India 2016 ), Government policies, Constitutional amendments, Bills passed and pending in parliament,

To clear IAS Exam, aspirants are advised to have a long-term strategy. Though most of the serious candidates starts there prepration 12 months before and clear all the three stages of exam. So what matters is not the duration of the preparation, but the quality of the same.

A disciplined and focused mind with a passion for learning and reading is the basic trait of all successful candidates. The UPSC Civil Services exam is more a test of the analytic and presentation skills along with knowledge gained by the candidate rather than a test which checks candidate’s mathematical or verbal skills. To clear IAS, student should have right guidance for prelims and mains with right study material.
