The exam is conducted in three steps. The Step 1 is meant to assess the understanding of students in applying the important concepts of the sciences basic to the practice of medicine. it mainly emphasis on principles and mechanisms underlying health, disease, and modes of therapy. It is a one day examination which is conducted in 8 hours. The practise materials and sample tests are available in the official website. Step 2 is for testing the clinical skills of candidates. This include a bility of examinees to apply medical knowledge, skills, and understanding of clinical science for the providing proper patient care under supervision, and emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention.
Step 3 emphasis on patient management in ambulatory settings. It is the final examination in the USMLE sequence leading to a license to practice medicine without supervision. It is comparatively easy than other two. I suggest you to prepare yourself for the exam along with your studies rather than preparing after completion of course.
