Since as you said you will going to take the CSE department at the NIT Surathkal and inorder to be prepared for the placements you should have the atleast co academics activities like Paper Presentation, Mini Project, Communication skills , Lab activity's etc will make you future ready for the placements. So make your self all rounder such that you will be eligible to sit in approx all the company's and will be able to fetch the best package offer.

First you have to maintain your CGPA near about 8 CGPA. If you are able to maintain that then further you should go for your coding skill either you can go for C language , java, c++ etc.

You can go for trending technologies like node.js, cloud ,angular , big data and any other technology .There are number of things to do .So, You have to choose a stream based on your intrest to get placed for eg. Web development, android development etc.
