Dear Goutam

It's not about girl but today's society is giving same opportunities for both male and female people.

Those interested in serving society while pursuing a career that promises a good future could choose an undergraduate (UG) degree in medicine or allied disciplines. Here are some study options one could consider.

MBBS DEGREE

The 5.5-year MBBS programme, which includes a year of rotational internship, trains students in subjects like gynaecology, paediatrics, obstetrics, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathology to name a few. It includes practical as well as theoretical components.

Students, who wish to apply to the MBBS programme, need to have scored a minimum of 50% in physics, chemistry and biology (PCB) and also passed English at the plus-two level. Candidates are selected through nationaland state-level tests, including the All India Pre-Medical Pre-Dental Entrance Test (AIPMT) conducted by the Delhi-based CBSE. The test is conducted for admission to MBBSBDS courses under 15% national quota seats in government medicaldental colleges in the country under the control of the Centre's Directorate General of Health Services, except in Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Telangana. Additionally, a number of states universities institutions use the test's merit list to pick applicants for MBBSBDS seats under their control.

Apart from these, aspirants may also be required to take tests conducted by individual institutes for their programmes. For entry through state-level and individual institute tests, minimum requirements range from 55% to 60% marks.

Informs Colonel Abhijit Rudra, spokesperson of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, "Candidates looking at joining AFMC are required to mention that while applying online for the AIPMT."

Says Dr KL Talukdar, professor of anatomy, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati, "Graduates can join as apprentices or assist senior medical professionals. They can also join as faculty at medical organisations." Adds Rudra, "Those with an MBBS degree from AFMC can be commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). Apart from acquiring the status of being class-I gazetted officers, these graduates are paid as per the Central government pay scale. They receive a number of perks and an opportunity to serve in India as well as abroad as part of Indian contingents in UN peacekeeping missions."

Those looking to study further can pursue a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS) or the Diplomate of National Board (DNB), a title awarded by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), an autonomous academic body under the Union ministry of health and family welfare, on completion of a PG degree.

DENTISTRY

The BDS is a four-year course with a year's internship. "Students study basic subjects such as general medicine, pathology, microbiology, human anatomy, including embryology and histology, human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, etc. The third year consists of clinical exercises, first on lab models and then on live patients," informs Dr Vaishali Vadgaonkar, dean, Bharati Vidyapeeth Dental College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai. For entry to BDS programmes, a minimum of 50% is required. "Students have to clear either the AIPMT, common entrance test (CET) conducted by the respective states or individual tests conducted by deemed universities," says Vadgaonkar. "Students opting for a PG can pursue a specialisation and then train in a super-specialisation," she adds. That apart, graduates can explore research institutes, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, educational institutes or dental clinics among other options for career opportunities.

VETERINARY SCIENCE

Veterinary anatomy and histology, physiology, biochemistry, parasitology, toxicology, etc, form the core structure of the five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (BVSc&AH) programme that includes a sixmonth internship. Aspiring veterinarians with at least 50% marks in science subjects (PCB) at the plus-two level need to take the All India Pre-Veterinary Test (AIPVT). "Graduates can work with government animal husbandry departments as well as with poultry and dairy farms. They can start their private practice or work as lecturers or medical representatives," says Jaideep Dutta, a senior research fellow with a leading veterinary medicine company.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS

For those interested in the AYUSH system of medicine, a degree or diploma in ayurveda, unani, siddha, yoga, naturopathy and homeopathy, is the way ahead. For entry into BAMS, BUMS and BHMS, one needs to score at least 50%.

"Students who wish to specialise in these streams of medicine need to clear the respective state-level CETs," informs Dr Satyanarayana Bhat, principal, Government Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital, Mysore. However, certain institutions admit candidates on the basis of their plus-two results if they meet the eligibility criterion. For entry to BUMS programmes, a number of institutes mandate the knowledge of Urdu apart from PCB and English.

Concludes Bhat, "Students completing a BAMS, BHMS or BUMS are qualified to establish their private practice. They can also be part of government dispensaries or hospitals."
