You give jee mains three times once with your 12th boards, and two more times in next 2 consecutive years.
In 2021 there are four attempts for JEE Mains , so if you scores low percentile in one attempt then you can give another attempt (all 4 attempts) and improve your score.
As far as JEE Advanced is concerned,
The maximum number of attempts that the candidates can attempt JEE Advanced is two times in two consecutive years.

Dear Aspirant,
One can give all 4 attempts of JEE Mains of that particular year and can give JEE Mains consecutively for 3 years.(irrespective of what he scores in first attempt or any attempt).
Suppose a students passes class 12th in 2021 then he can give JEE Mains in 2021,2022,2023.
Also one can give JEE Advanced for 2 years consecutively.
Suppose a students passes class 12th in 2021 then he can give JEE Advanced in 2021,2022.
