Start preparing from final year itslef.
You can alternative ly take up work experience and simultaneously appear for CAT to gain bonus points as work experience candidates are given more preference over freshers.

Only you need to satisfy the min percentage criteria of 50% in all of your academic degree I.e. 10th 12th and graduation (BA).
On a positive side I would like to tell you that most of the students enrolling in IIMs or other management colleges are engineers so to maintain diversity they prefer non engineers. You will not only able to get additional marks in your aggregate total for being non engineer but also will be able to get an interview call from top IIMs at a little less percentile than the ones who are engineers.
So give your best, aim to secure atleast 98+ percentile you will surely have a high probability of getting selected in a top IIM.
It does not matter from which graduation stream you are from but what matters in why you are interested in MBA?
So whether arts. commerce or science you can appear for MBA course.
To apply for CAT, you should have scored minimum 50 percent if from general category and from other reserved categories its 45%.
