Yeah there are opportunities in BHEL, BEL, ISRO, BARC, DRDO,SAIL,GAIL etc. But what is the number of posts available? In SAIL,GAIL the number will be a single digit. BHEL is a bit better. Since many of the PSUs need a GATE score, and since they are high paying jobs (bhel pays around 8.3Lpa, power grid around 10-12Lpa), only the top 500-600 rankers get an interview call. (Some of my friends have abandoned their mtech plans after they got these jobs).

BARC recruits every year, but they too choose the top gate rankers. Interview too is very tough to crack, not impossible though (couple of my friends are working there).

So your only choices are ISRO and BEL. These are only two companies that take ECE students in relatively huge numbers (both take in almost 80 people every year). One good thing is they have their own exam. So even if you screw up your GATE, you don't have to worry.

Now, what else can you do apart from these if you an ECE student?

  • You can write the NET exam and join as a JRF in any of the prestigious research labs of CSIR, IITs, NITs, IIST etc. This exam is held twice a year(June/July and Dec/Jan). This, if you are interested in research.
  • Look for any temporary posts in any of the government companies. There are many on temporary basis for btech. Gain good experience and then try in private sector. You can expect a good pay.

I can only think of these two at this moment since you have confined the question to government jobs. I might have missed many things. So do consult your seniors/teachers for more options. They are your best guides.

Can you also say about private sector jobs?

A good GATE scorecard and a good core private job has no relevance at all. GATE score is required for recruitment into public sector companies which are undertakings of the central or the state government. However, a good gate scorecard is always something to pen down in your resume.Good private core companies will always focus on your skills and attitude. While doing b. tech focus on doing internships with renowned companies and select a good project in your final sem. This coupled with good good communication skills and positive attitude will land you a decent job in a private core company.
