It's never too late and you can just start preparing for it now also. Just keep in mind while studying for GATE you shall be able to clear your backlogs also.
Therefore I will advice to just start the preparation and go through your syllabus well.
For mechanical student it is sometimes hard to get job in the college placements. So if you want to do well in your field you should work hard and crack the exam to get into some PSU or can apply in IITs for MTech programmes.
For the preparation tips you can refer to career 360 exam guide and start your preparation as soon as possible.

Yes, you can start your preparation. You have to manage your time you can make your proper time-table.
Allot proper time to your course and to prepare for GATE. You can set your weekly targets.
Before starting your preparation make sure you are aware of the complete syllabus, exam pattern and important topics. You should be aware of your strength and weakness. So, you can prepare accordingly.
Refer previous year papers to understand the exam pattern and level of the questions.
