There are basically two categories that you could fall under(Note- You can fall under both):

  1. You know what engineering is about(generically) and you are passionate about it and that is why you want to study it.
  2. You want to study engineering, not out of passion, but for various possible reasons. (There is nothing wrong in not being passionate and still wanting to do something, and there is nothing wrong in having this sort of clarity, in fact you are way ahead of most people if you do.)

If you fall under the first category:

  • Talk to engineering students who are in their final year or pre-final year. Students pursuing a master's degree would also be good. Fist years may NOT be a good option.
  • Talk to students from a variety of disciplines/branches.
  • Prepare your questions beforehand and ask specific questions.

The principles of engineering are the same irrespective of discipline. These principles can be applied in a variety of fields to solve problems. So find out the field in which the problems interest you naturally. That is the branch you must opt for.

Choosing a good college is only about facilities/extra-curriculars because if you fall into this category, you are self motivated and do not rely upon external entities to push you in your academics.

If you fall under the second category:

  • You know your intent behind wanting engineering.
  • If it is placements, talk to people from the industry and see which industry you want to work in/ is appropriate for you.
  • If it is something like followin
