Hi Pavan,
In order to prepare for GRE through self study, you will require a time frame of around 2-4 months depending on the amount of time you devote to preparation. On average, 2 hours a day will be sufficient to complete your preparation in under 3 months.
Month 1:
The best preliminary vocabulary preparation method would be to read the book 'Word Power Made Easy' by Norman Lewis. This is easily available in bookstores and online in under INR 200.
For further vocabulary preparation, revise the Barron’s 333 high frequency word list, the Manhattan 1000 word list and the Barron’s 1100 word list. Out of these, the 333 word list is the most important and integral for getting a good GRE score.
Month 2:
The most important aspect of GRE preparation is practice. The GRE is often considered to a be test not for a student’s scholastic ability but for his ability to take the GRE. Therefore, after 1 month of vocabulary preparation, you should start doing 15-30 verbal questions per day in order to ensure that you achieve a good score.
For quantitative preparation, only a 10 th grade mathematical level is required. Therefore, you will not have to do much prior preparation apart from going through the ' ETS: Official Guide to the GRE General Test ' book. After this, you can start with 15-30 practice questions per day.
One of the best books for practice problems in both the quantitative reasoning and verbal reasoning sections is the '5 lb book of GRE practice problems' from Manhattan Prep. It is available online on amazon
