In real terms the two courses are same from the base but are different in their area of interest, like in school we used to study english language and literature. In EFL University, M.A. English is the main degree which further includes specialization in a particular language that you can choose.
First I will explain you the general difference between the two, then about the programme offered by EFLU.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN M.A. ENGLISH AND M.A. ENGLISH LITERATURE
M.A. English represents a very vast scope of studies as English as a term stands for language, that is, study of grammar, prosody, linguistics, phonetics, composition, drafting and mode of translation as well. It covers basic english of post graduate level with some portions of literature.
M.A. in English Literature presents an exciting combination of traditional offerings and radical new pathways of enquiry in many contextualities and contexture of world history and traditional people like Shakespeare, 18th century English novel, Romantic Poetry, 19th century fiction, British Drama, Literature of modern India.
About the M.A. programme offered by EFLU
The English and Foreign Language University offers a number of post-graduate programmes in English, Arabic, French,German, Russian, and Spanish. One reason for the popularity of these programmes over the years has been because of the cafeteria system they follow, degree is awarded in MA in English with specialization in one subject out of these:-
So basically if you go for M.A. English(general) then you course will cover other sections too. You will have to get 30 credits in Literature from the courses on offer from the 4 departments in the School of Literary Studies viz., Comparative Literature, English Literature, Indian and World Literatures, and Translation Studies and 20 credits from the following areas:
1. Language Sciences (10 credits)
2. English Language Education (10 credits) and
3. Free credits: 30 (from any discipline)
This means that in all, a student with a general M.A. English degree from the University would have done more than 50% of the courses from the literature and language menu and at the same time be introduced to related disciplines like Cultural Studies, Film Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Media and Communication etc.
And if you opt for M.A. English Literature, it will cover in depth study in literature areas only like Shakespeare, 18th century English novel, Romantic Poetry, 19th century fiction, British Drama, Literature of modern India.
1.Duration of all the programme is Four semesters.
2.Eligibility is a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with 55% marks for general/OBC, 50% for SC/ST students/Participants.
3. M.A. ENGLISH (CAFETERIA SYSTEM): ENTRANCE TEST FOR ALL SPECIALIZATIONS
There is a common entrance test for the M.A. English programmes through the cafeteria system. The duration of the entrance test is two hours. The entrance test has FOUR sections, each section testing your ability/skills in a particular area:
Section A (25 marks): Literature
Section B (25 marks): Reading Comprehension
Section C (25 marks): Organizational Ability and Writing Skills
Section D (25 marks): Verbal and Analytical Ability
EFLU Hyderabad is considered the best of all thethree because it allows you to select your specialization easily.
Annual fee in M.A. Programmes is somewhere between INR 7000-10000.
