In India coal in found in Gondwana deposits in peninsular region and rich tertiary deposits of North East India. Majority of coal fields are found in Chotanagpur Plateau also known as Damodar Valley. Major coal producing states in India are Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.
