Admission in IITs is it through advanced examination , now to be eligible for writing JEE advanced you need to first qualify JEE Mains.
ATTEMPT LIMIT FOR JEE MAINS
One can give JEE Mains entrance examination for a maximum of 3 consecutive years starting from the year of passing 12th board examination.
Now,
JEE Main entrance examination is conducted twice a year i.e January and April session.
So, the maximum number of attempts for jee mains entrance examination
= 2 times *3 years
= 6 attempts in total for jee mains
JEE ADVANCED ATTEMPT LIMIT
One can give or attempt JEE Advanced for the maximum of two times and that too in consecutive years.
Also , to be eligible for admission in IITs one needs at least 75% marks in aggregate in class 12 if belong to general or obc category or at least 65% marks if belongs to SC/ST or must be in the top 20 percentile in class 12 examination.

Admission in IIT is based on merit in JEE Advanced. You can appear in JEE Advanced for a maximum of two number of times in two consecutive years. You must first appear in JEE Main and qualify in it to be eligible to appear in JEE Advanced. The eligibility to appear in JEE Advanced is that you must have passed 10+2 with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with 75% aggregate for SC/ST it is 65% aggregate marks.
