Hello dear..
Unlike other branches B Tech Mechanical is a basic degree for opting various branches of engineering for doing Post graduation. Mechatronics, Robotics, Aeronautical, Automobile etc are few among these branches of engineering pursue post graduation. Automobile designing is a very challenging MS course unless otherwise you prove as a scholar in this discipline.
Car companies have reams of engineers to do the engineering, but only a handful of talented designers who dream and sculpt the cars of tomorrow. It’s a different skill set.
Last time I checked, mechanical engineering students don’t spend 6 hrs a day drawing cars like transportation design students do. So if you haven’t and you have to start from scratch, the hill you need to climb just turned into a mountain.
Some Tips to prepare:-
1. Trend Setter . -You are looking always into the future as a designer and at the foremost position of setting trends. You need to be able to feel the pulse of the consumer and be able to come up with designs that the public will love.
2. Scientific Art . -As an auto- mobile designer, in particular, you will also be required to look at material used, the type of fabric, shapes that will be possible and how to make it look attractive. Understanding how cars are manufactured and how they work will help you coherently design cars that are easily built and give better performance.
3.Get hands on experience working with cars .
4.Apply for internships at design firms.
Hi Aaron
Mechanical engineering is an important core branch when it comes to automotive engineering. Automobile engineering can be said to be a sub branch of mechanical engineering. If you take up mechanical engineering , you can specialise towards automobile domain in your masters. Automotive engineering wouldn't have existed if mechanical engineering did not exist in the first place. I would now discuss the important points that you must keepin mind while studying mechanical engineering if you aspire to be an automobile designer. They are as follows :-
If you follow these above mentioned steps , you will be able to build an attractive profile which automobile companies look for in candidates when they come for recruitment.Such a profile will help you too if you later wish to do your masters in automotive engineering in foreign universities in countries like Germany and USA where major automobile companies like Mercedes, Ford etc are based. A strong profile will increase your chances of getting admission in these foreign universities which have strong tie ups with these automobile giants.
I hope I have been able to clear your query. I hope you get to fulfil your dream of becoming an automobile designer and my best wishes to you for your future.
Thanks
Hello Aaron,
If you want to be an automobile designer you need to have some prerequisite knowledge like the mechanics, aerodynamics and all the nuances of design. If you are pursuing automobile engineering, then you have the arsenal at your disposal I guess.
Now coming to the courses that you can opt is Masters in Automobile Engineering.
After you are done with your engineering, I would suggest you do your masters in automobile engineering(if you are not doing it as your bachelors). If you have already done that during bachelors then first decide on which part to start with, is it aerodynamics or IC engines and then do your masters in one of the subjects. You can always learn the lower priority topic in parallel to your masters on your own(of course it would be difficult, they are very wide fields).
Hope this helps.
