In my September attempt of Jee mains I got 88.2%ile this was the highest of both attempts. I belong to OBC caste but under creamy layer. but at the time of registration I had put the details as OBC NCL. should I apply for advance is it safe though?

See OBC has two sub categories that Non-Creamy Later and other one is Creamy Later. So the Creamy Layer under OBC category is not considered for reservation purpose and it will be treated as General category. As we know that NTA released the cut-offs for different categories so it is also described below :-
- Common Rank List (CRL) - 90.3765335
- GEN-EWS - 70.2435518
- Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL) - 72.8887969
- Scheduled Caste (SC) - 50.1760245
- Scheduled Tribe (ST) - 39.0696101
- PwD - 0. 0618524
So in your case you have to secure 90 .3765335 percentile to become eligible for JEE-Advance but you have scored only 88.2 percentile so you are not eligible for JEE-Advance. Note that if you are not eligible you cannot apply For JEE-Advance even if you wish. For more details kindly refer to the link given below :-
